1. How were Greek religious beliefs and Greek literature linked? Write your answer as a generalization. The Greeks believe in gods and goddesses, but the stories of who they are, what they do, and how they do things, are made of myths. Myths are a great part of Greek literature. The stories of gods and goddesses didn’t only come from stories (or myths) they also came from long poems called epic poems. Epic poems tell stories or some warriors and gods (goddesses) 2. What role did religious festivals play in Greek life? Religious festivals were held to honor the gods. Each god or goddess had a festival to honor them. The Greeks did these festivals so the gods and goddesses wouldn’t get angry at them. An angry god or goddess means trouble. During these special festivals they made sacrifices, processions, races, and other athletic games. Example: During the festival for Athena, a new robe was put on her statue in her main temple. Also for one of Zeus’ big festivals they held the Olympics. 3. How are the Iliad and the Odyssey connected? They are both an epic poem. They are both part of one, just split into two parts. The Iliad is the first part. It is about how the Trojans stole a Greeks wife, so they Greeks surrounded the city of Troy for 10 years. Then they put themselves in a Trojan horse to get in. The Iliad is known for portraying great heroes. The Odyssey is the “Part 2” of the poem. It is about how the Greeks had a long journey back home after the war. It took them over 9 years to get back home. 4. What lesson might the Greeks have learned from the myth of Prometheus? The Greeks might have learned that if you mess with a god and make a god angry, you would be punished severly. Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans but as punishment Zeus chained him to a rock forever. 5. Why might Atalanta prefer not to marry? Maybe Atalanta didn’t want to marry because she wouldn't be able to race. In the festivals like Hera's only unmarried women competed in races. -Aleena
