Aran Selhi I Search Part1 World War II Before I chose to this project I wanted to do about video games but when Mr. Hewett said that we had to find a book about the project. I thought about it for a while and then I chose to do World War II. I remember from last all the things that we learnt and knew it wasn’t all of it. So I knew this is a chance to learn all about it. Last year I remember coming home to tell my dad all about what I learnt and I would also test him on what he knows. Most of the time he knew these things but at the end of the project my teacher told me that we would carry on with the project next year. Here is some of the things that I learnt last year: Hitler blamed all of Germany’s problems on the Jews that lived all around the world and mostly the Jews who lived in Poland. Once Hitler captured Jews, he sent them to a place called Death Camp. In Death camp they torture people and some Jews are then slaves. One family lived in Amsterdam and survived for a few years. They hid in a little secret place in their house and one of the family members is called Anne Frank. Anne Frank kept a Diary while the war was going on and before the war had ended she died and after the war her dad found her Diary and published it and now you can see her books that her dad published. In shops you had to buy things with ration coupons and not money. People couldn’t get any supplies from any other county because they were all at war and no one could reach any counties except for their own. There was a place called black market and it is where people buy supplies for money not ration coupons. Aran Selhi I Search Part 2 What Happened In World War II In Europe? All the facts that I know about VE Day and my guiding question. VE Day is when World War II ended on May 8th 1945. VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day. World War II lasted for seven years and ended when Germany surrendered to the allies. After the war Winston Churchill (the prime minister of England) lost the election but he is still known to be a great leader of the United Kingdom. Clement Attlee replaced Winston Churchill as the Prime minister of England. Many people died during the world war. On this website you can find stories from people who survived World War II: www.loc.gov/vets/stories/ve-day.html. This website shows you how people worked and fought in the war, it also shows how many letters they wrote to their parents, for example: a man named Charles Remsburg sent 194 letters to his parents. Now it is time for the best part: Wild guesses! I think wild guesses are the best because I write about things that I want to know and so far I have learnt many things and this interests me so much that I want to learn more. • I think that people have been forced to go to war and nobody actually had a chance to choose to go to war or to stay out of the war. • I think that this war is kind of a carry on from World War I. • I think Hitler didn’t commit suicide. • I think this Europe and the U.S. war was mostly about World War. • I think this war mainly affected Germany and Japan. • I think that this war would be the last world war there will be. Aran Selhi I-Search Part 3 All about My Research For a project called I Search, we have had to choose a subject that we are interested in. Then we find information about that subject, for example I have chosen to learn about World War II. I did my first part of it which is where I write about why I chose this subject. After that my second part was about my research from my book and three sites. Just after my second part there was a time when we had to take notes on facts and by that time the limit of places to get research spread further. Finally now I am doing about how I found the notes and where I got them from. My first set of information was from a book that we got from the school library. We got our books around the time we started doing this project and after that we had to fill a form out. On that form we had to find websites from a school website and that has helped me a lot now although I did learn I bit of information last year in 5th grade. Once the limit got bigger I then got lots more information because then we were allowed to look on more school websites. We couldn’t look on Google because some sites may have viruses and the school doesn’t want laptops with viruses on them. We also had to look at something called bias, bias means that someone thinks they are doing something good and other people think they are bad. For example: I was making a diary of my friend’s brother and his parents didn’t like what I was doing. Here is a bias thing about how World War II started: Germany thought invading Poland will give Germany good privileges and then England and France didn’t like it so they attacked Germany because they were supporting Poland. Aran Selhi 29th February 2012 World War II Part 4 I-Search • My Guiding Question: What were the results of World War II in Europe? Thesis Statement: The result of World War II in Europe was tragic since many life's were lost, many cites had been destroyed, lots of people died of starvation since there weren’t many supplies and people were tortured in death camps. How This Started This war started on 1939 because Germany first invaded Poland and England and France fought Germany. Then other countries came into this war which then started World War II.(World Book) Black Markets In shops you had to buy things with ration coupons and not money. People couldn’t get any supplies from any other county because they were all at war and no one could reach any counties except for their own. There was a place called black market and it is where people buy supplies for money not ration coupons.(Aran) Anne Frank and the Jews Hitler blamed all of Germany’s problems on the Jews that lived all around the world and mostly the Jews who lived in Poland. Once Hitler captured Jews, he sent them to a place called Death Camp. In Death camp they torture people and some Jews are then slaves. One family lived in Amsterdam and survived for a few years. They hid in a little secret place in their house and one of the family members is called Anne Frank. Anne Frank kept a Diary while the war was going on and before the war had ended she died and after the war her dad found her Diary and published it and now you can see her books that her dad published.(Aran) How The World Was Effected The world was affected by the two atomic bombs that hit Japan in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.(World war ii, 2011)At the end of the war Germany was split into four zones The United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and France.During the war Germany invaded Poland,Luxembourg, Belgium and Northern France.(Stokesbury, 2012) About Leaders Dictators are people who lead countries like Winston Churchill, he was a leader for England. England had a queen, a king, and a prime minister with all of these leaders they still had a dictator. Some dictators worked together in the war and some fought by themselves. Many dictators lost this war and worked and still lost this war just like Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler.(Aran) References World Book, library book retrieved from the school library. Jan, 20, 2012 Si Hyun Internet! Finally!! It was Friday; the end of a tiring week and I can have a weekend. Excitedly thinking about what I would do for the weekend, I got my planner, binder and reading book from the locker, and then headed to the first period, Social Studies ; Mr. Hewett’s class. Like usual class started with the daily bulletin but I couldn’t hide the excitement for Friday. After Mr. Hewett finished reading the daily bulletin, our class started doing D.O.L., Daily Oral Language. I usually finished fast so I looked at the agenda for today, Daily Bulletin, D.O.L., Social Studies, reading, and finally I-Search. ‘I- Search? Is it a new project?’ as soon as I thought of starting another project, I got exhausted and got a little irritated. Thinking ‘How am I supposed to handle a project if I already have two projects going on?!’ But still I was curious what kind of project it was. Because a project called ‘I-Search’ umm... won’t you get interested to know what it is? It was kind of strange to have a project named I-Search. And at the end of the class, we lacked of time and Mr. Hewett almost forgot about telling about the I-Search. Few seconds after the bell rang; Mr. Hewett told us it has got to do something about searching. Four periods of other classes, Math, Science, Art and P.E, finally the day was finished!! I got my stuffs from the locker and went home. When I arrived at home, I took a shower and lied down on the bed. Just then I remembered about the new project, I-Search then I told it to my mom about what the project is. (On the next two days, Saturday and Sunday, I completely forgot about the project.) End of the peaceful weekend and Monday again. I was tired but then, I was so eager to know more about the project. I assumed that it was connected to something with searching as Mr. Hewett told us. Mr. Hewett gave us some handouts and explained what we had to do in this project. Basically we had to find a topic on our own and research on it. It was kind of strange because it was the first time we got to choose what to research on, not the teachers. I was really excited about the ‘I- Search’. I was thinking so much about what I should do for my topic. I was thinking so much that I thought my head got a virus or something. I had so many things that I want to learn (only thing which interests me), but the main thing I wanted to do was something about science. The reason was that I can learn a lot from researching about it. I thought of doing space like, aliens, planets, and galaxies. But still I wasn’t satisfied and couldn’t think of any guiding question. Letting my brain cool down, I switched on my computer and I went to Google, listening to some music and went on Face book to chat with my friends. Then suddenly the internet wasn’t working. ‘Oh GOD I hate internet!’ I was shouting to myself like an insane guy. After saying that I knew exactly what to do for ‘I-Search’, Internet. Thinking deeply I realized that we use internet almost every day and barely anyone knows the history of it, like who invented it. And I thought it would be a very interesting topic that I can find a lot of facts to learn from. And now, I am really excited to research more on it. Now you know how I got the topic and why I wanted to do it, now I will tell you the information I know about the internet for sure, information I think I know its wild guesses which I need to know. Firstly, things I know for sure about internet: I know that Internet can be used in many technologies like PC computer, laptops, phones and tablets. And it’s a connection which is used to communicate with people, on computer, or other devices. You can chat with people, use voice chat and even face chat like Skype. Also you can probably do everything on internet. You can shop, chat with friends, watch videos, read comics, and books, research, download movies, and music. With all this things you can do on internet. But there are pros and cons in internet. There are also pros and cons of internet. Some pros are that you can do anything in there. You can chat with people who might be staying really far from you or in another country, you can do work easier and faster, like writing and researching. Some of the cons are that when you use too much of internet, you might get addicted to it and get mentally ill which would cause a lot of problems. Also there might be a cyber bullying on you which would be very uncontrollable and also sometimes there might be pictures on internet which might embarrass you for years. So now, things I think I know. I think I know that the internet was made in late 1980s, I am not quite sure. I also think that, when the internet was first made, it was really uncomfortable to use, and took really long time going into a website. Also the computers would have been really big. Also there would have been only a few people who used internet when it just came out. And now, wild guesses. I think that about 60% of the people on earth have access to the internet. And there would be many satellites which were sending to space for internet. Well, that’s it for my wild guesses. Now, the most important thing, things I need to know. Things I need to know, and research on are, firstly “Who were the people to invent internet and how did they get the idea?” The second thing that I need to research on is, “What was the first computer to have internet” I was really curious thinking which computer was used for internet for the first time in the history. Then “What was the main purpose of it? Was it just for communicating?” I was thinking what led the scientist to make this computer communication which changed our lives. Third thing is “How fast was the improvement of internet till now?” This forced me to think about the future. Then I got another got with a question “How will the future Internet or communication be?” For the last question, I thought about “How did the development of internet effect how we live, or our life?” I will try answering all of my questions on Part 3!! I got my guiding questions and what I needed to research on for my part four. Now, it has been about one week since I started to research on the Internet. It was really fun researching about the internet, and I learned many things from the research which I didn’t even know it existed or not. My research everything did not go smooth like water, there were many problems. While I was researching, I noticed that the topic I choose was too broad so there was too much information in websites and in the books. So then from all of those information, I had to read all of them and had to take notes on the only important, and also there was so much information I had to know to continue with my research which was really hard, confusing ,and took a really long time, which was one of my biggest problems. Another difficulty I faced while researching was that there was too much information which are repeated on the websites and did not have the information’s I needed. So, to get more information, I had to visit many other websites to get the information. During my research, I had to make sure I used reliable websites or resources. To know if the information I got was reliable, I checked many other websites if it had the same information, and I also used reliable search engines, like the school library websites and the school online subscriptions. While researching, and getting the facts, I noticed that there were many ways how people considered Internet. Some people might think it’s the best invention made which could help us in so many ways and some people thought that if it is not used in a proper way, it might lead to more trouble. There are many advantages and also disadvantages as I already mentioned in the beginning. For many people around the world, Internet is part of their life, and many big companies are on internet, like Facebook and Google. As internet got bigger and it became part of their life from luxury, many people think that internet is a really good invention made which can help us in so many ways like working in companies, communicating, and also education. There are also people who think internet is useless if it is not used in the proper way. They think that internet should be used only for education and researching not for communicating because sometimes people cyber bully, putting pictures which makes people embarrassed, and also drug dealers or terrorist’s can use internet to communicate to people and get their job done easier than ever. Advice for the 6th grader next year who will be doing this project. As I told you, I had many problems, and to prevent some of them is that try to get a topic which is not so broad and also choose a topic which many people know about and not things like theories. If you research on topics too broad, there would be too much information, and if you do a topic on thing which are not known so well, there won’t be enough information. Now I-Search part 4 the final part of I-Search! It has been almost three weeks since I have started my research on internet and not I’ve got all the information I needed to answer essential question and my six questions I made. Fist the six questions. 1. Who were the people to invent internet and how did they get the idea? 2. What was the first computer to have internet 3. What was the main purpose of it? Was it just for communicating? 4. How fast was the improvement of internet till now? 5. How will the future Internet or communication be? 6. How did the development of internet effect how we live, or our life? This is the answer for my first and the third question; it wasn’t group of people who made the internet. If I tell you a brief history, after the World War 2, in late 1960s United States’ Department of Defense was worried if the Soviet Union would start a nuclear war so they decided to upgrade the most important part taken in wars, communication. So then United States’ science lab, Lawrence Roberts of the Lincoln Laboratory (www.walthowe.com), started linking computer installations together to make a communication which can withstand wars. Then there it was the birth of the first form of internet, RPANET or Advanced Research Project Agency. So it was the United States who invented the first form of internet. (Encyclopedia (book)) In 1969, first computers to have internet were in four main Universities, ULCA (University of California Los Angeles) , Stanford Research Institute, UCSB and University of Utah, were brought online. (www.walthowe.com) The improvement in internet till now was quite astonishing; it took almost 30 years to become a Major technical force. But I think starting from now, the development will move on faster because we have better and faster technology than before. (www.accessscience.com) The internet changed the way we live, it made our life easier than ever. You can shop there; chat with friends, watch movies, playing games and also for work. Also there are huge companies which are made in internet which supports the economy of the world. Now I will answer my essential question. “What is the history of development of the Internet?” The final broad answer or a thesis I came up with this question was, the development of the Internet was magnificent. It connects roughly 360 million people, or roughly 6% of the world; however, it was first used to share a small amount of information between a few colleges. The internet used to be a net called ARPANET, it was made for communication in nuclear warfare and there was four computers connected. By 1981 over 200 computers were connected to ARPANET. Then it got bigger and bigger so then the ARPANET was divided into two parts. One was used for National Science Foundation (NSF) and the other one was used for military. (www.worldbookonline.com) Even if there was a site made, searching for something on the internet is an extremely hard job, and only the professional computer programmer could do it. But then the World Wide Web was made by Tim Berners-Lee and was able to see the information Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), (Encyclopedia (book)) which helped people to use easier to use internet easier. But still getting the right information you want was hard. So there it was, Google. Google is a search engine. It just easily directs you to websites instead of you going all over the internet and trying to find information. As you can see, Internet has a long history, and there are much much more information I can tell you than just these. It was fun doing research on Internet, I learned so many things about it and also it was a little tiring. Bibliography 1- Walt , H. (24, March 2012). A brief history of internet. Gower Rande 1-24-12 My I-Search Hello, this is my I-search report. You’re all probably wondering what my I-Search report is about. Well, originally, I wasn’t that interested in my topic. In fact, I don’t think I even knew about my topic until a few years ago. When I was six, I saw a file on my dad’s computer with the picture of a meteor on the file. Underneath it, it read, “Age of Mythology: Gold.” When I asked my dad what it was, he just said,” It’s just an old game that I don’t play anymore.” Then I forgot about it until I was ten. My dad and I were playing on a strategy game called “Age of Empires III”. After we finished, I started looking through my dad’s old games and found the game that got me interested in my guiding question in the first place. “Age of Mythology: Gold” was also a strategy game, but instead of using machines in the 17OO’s, the game particularly focused on the mythologies of ancient Greece, sandy Egypt, the watery kingdom of Atlantis, and the frozen lands of what is presently known as Norway. When I started to play the game, it was so cool! I played as much as I could when I had any free time. I played all four factions; Greek, Egyptian, Norse, and, as weird as this already is, they included Atlantian. Greek, obviously, became my favorite, and it included lots of myth units, like Cyclops, Colossi, Pegasi, Nemean Lions, Medusas, Hydras, Scyllas, and a lot more. And, from the underworld, you could summon a Titan. Not an actual Titan, like from the Titanomachy, but monsterfully powerful creatures. There are four different Titans in the game, each depending on the faction you choose (Greek: Cerberus, a three-headed dog; Egyptian: Amun-Ra or Ra, a falcon-headed sun god; Norse: A massive troll with a hammer of ice; Atlantian: a behemoth of stone and lava with enormous crystals jutting out its shoulders.). That game really got me into mythology. I read every book I could that was on Greek mythology; comic books, websites, graphic novels, anything! And then the ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ came out. Man, was I hooked on Riordan’s work! It took some time, but I finished the series. Then he started a couple new series, ‘The Kane Chronicles’, and ‘Heroes of Olympus’. I did finish ‘The Kane Chronicles’, but I’m still working on the ‘Heroes of Olympus’ second book, ‘The Son of Neptune’. I really enjoy learning and reading about the legends of the Greeks. I can really lose myself in the stories and enjoy imagining what the gods and goddesses looked like, acted like and how they used their powers on each other and on people. I will probably never know everything about the Greek gods, but I will try my best to do so. Part 2: But enough with that; let’s see what I know for sure on my topic. By the way, in case you didn’t get what my guiding question is, my guiding question is: ‘How did the Greeks believe that their gods had helped mortals and other beings?’ One of the many gods being worshiped by the Greeks was Zeus, the ruler of the sky and of the gods; he could create rainclouds and rocket down lightning bolts. He had many heroes as his sons, like a popular one, Hercules. Zeus’ believed powers could cause it to rain, making him a very important god to the mortals, because the rain made the farmers’ crops grow. He was believed to have many wives before he settled on Hera. His sacred animal is the fierce bald eagle. One of Zeus’ brothers is the keeper of the oceans, bestower of seismic events, and wielder of the trident. This god’s name is Poseidon. He is also responsible for storms at sea. The trident, when it strikes the earth, it creates an earthquake & crevice in the ground. Poseidon used all of his abilities in the Titanomachy, the war between the gods and the Titans. Some legends tell that he created horses, his sacred animal, out of sea foam. Fishermen prayed to him for good waters to sail on. Another sibling of Zeus is Hades, (Hade-EES) God of the underworld and of the afterlife. Hades was not responsible for a person’s death, though, the god Thanatos was. There is also a guard to the doors of the underworld, a giant, three headed dog that is dubbed Cerberus, (Sare-ER-Bus) who constantly guards the entrance of Erebus for anything sneaking in…..or out. Hades did have a wife; her name was Persephone, goddess of the underworld, and daughter of Zeus & Demeter. As it turns out, Hades didn’t have any children. His symbol is not an animal, but it is his metal helmet, created by the three one-eyed giants, the Cyclops, to render Hades invisible. Some other things that I may know about is the legend of the Titanomachy. In this legend, the youngest of the Titans, Kronos, lord of time, overthrows his father, Ouranos, with a sickle. Ouranos bled, and when his blood touched the earth, it created the Fates, mankind, the Gigantes, and nymphs, or spirits of the natural world. I got this information off a comic based on the beginning of creation to the end of the Titanomachy. Believe it or not, there is still something I don’t get about Greek mythology; if what the Greeks wrote down is proven wrong, why did they even record on their walls? There are some other questions that I would like to get answered would be like: • Why did the gods help heroes on their quests? • When did the gods help Greek heroes? • Which god or goddess appeared most in legends? • What Olympian gods helped fight the Titans in the Titanomachy? • Did Hermes assist mortal or immortal beings? Part 3 Well, just to kick this part off, I had some trouble gathering some information, here and there. I didn’t know what I should get information on with all of the questions I had on my guiding question, mostly because I ignored my five questions for a while. I went to a few websites, thinking that they would give me the answers. I also had some internet problems at my house making the process of information gathering slow, to say the least! I sometimes had to share the connection with someone else, which made things on my computer go slower than usual, setting me back some. And, sometimes my parents say that I have to stop doing things on my computer so they can do something on their P.C. like meetings, online shopping or chatting. We are currently trying to fix it by calling in the big-wigs at B.S.N.L. Anyway, the information that I found was all certainly true, because I’ve read a lot of stories on Greek mythology. But there was one part that I just didn’t trust on Hephaestus. He has always been described as the god of fire and patron of blacksmiths, and in what I found, weavers. And I know for certain it is true because I’ve also the entire read my share of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ books to know, and I’ve facts on gods than I can remember. But I don’t think that the weaver parts fit in very well. Finding information on Hermes proved challenging as well. I was trying to figure out why he was the only god able to enter the three realms, heaven, Earth, and the underworld. I search a bunch of sites that came up when I typed in the words into the search bar, but none of them told me why! So, right now I’m guessing it just comes with the job of being the messenger god. There is also a goddess named Iris, who is also a messenger and goddess of rainbows. If you are finding this report intriguing so far, then I’ll bet you’re a real fanatic on mythologies of different kinds. If I were you, if you’re still looking for a guiding question, or if you’re not positive that your guiding question is going to work out for you, I would recommend looking into Greek studies. And as for you people who don’t like this or if it doesn’t come to your liking, I understand, not very many people are interested in this type of research often. I like my topic that I chose, I would not change it, and if you are just waiting for an idea to just pop into your head or you’re just hanging there, not having a clue on what your topic is going to be, take my word for it, other mythologies. Part 4 So basically, some gods were believed to help mortals in their daily lives by using their powers. They were also believed to have protected heroes at various points in their lives. And how do I know for sure? Well, I know from a lot of sources (websites and books, basically). I have a couple of examples, but probably the biggest one would be the Titanomachy. The Titanomachy was believed to have been a ten year series of battles fought by the Olympian gods, Zeus, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon, and Hades, against the Titans, the divine beings ("Titanomachy," 2012). If it hadn’t been for the gods, the mortals (humans) beings would cease to exist. Another example is how Athena told Perseus how to kill Medusa without getting turned to stone by her face. He saw her by looking into a mirror-like shield and cut off her head with a sword ("medusa," ). If he had not received Athena’s information, he would have been made a chunk of concrete. The winged god of messengers, Hermes, is believed to help deceased mortals by guiding them to the underworld. He was also believed to have invented the lyre, pipes, musical scale, astronomy, weights, measures, boxing, and gymnastics (J.M.Hunt). This may seem odd, but Hephaestus didn’t really help mortals. Well, at least not directly. He is the smith and armorer of the gods, so he made weapons to help the gods win their battles. So he basically helps gods protect mortals and themselves (J.M. Hunt). And, supporting my earlier statement, and the one about the Titanomachy, mother Earth, or as the Greeks called ‘her’; Ge/Gaia, had been believed to have birthed a one hundred-headed, fire-breathing dragon, said to never rest, who was dubbed: Typhoneus. He was defeated by Zeus by his lightning bolts. Like I said before; if it hadn’t been for the gods, all humanity would cease to exist (J.M. Hunt). The first believed blacksmiths, the Cyclops, like Hephaestus, were brilliant at metal-working. They were three enormous one-eyed creatures. They each represented thunder, lightning, and lightning bolt. The helped Zeus defeat Kronos in the Titanomachy (J.M. Hunt). There were also believed to have been three Hecatonchieres, behemoths with fifty heads and one hundred hands, each possessing great strength. In the Titanomachy, they were freed from Tartarus, along with their brothers, the Cyclops, by Zeus. They were able to throw giant boulders at their enemies, one hundred at a time (J.M. Hunt). Typhon, believed to have been an enormous yet hideous son of Gaia, was the father of many monsters, like the Hydra, the Sphinx, Cerberus and the Chimera. Zeus defeated him setting him ablaze and buried him alive under Mt. Aetna. And lastly, have you ever heard about the Argonauts? There were a couple of gods who had to save them. When they had to go through the Symplegades, a wave briefly slowed them down. If Hera and Athena hadn’t pushed their ship, the Argo, the Symplegades would have come together and crushed the Argo. So, in conclusion, many gods and goddesses were believed to have played many roles in many important quests that heroes undertook, to the simple daily lives of many of the Greeks. Titanomachy. January 24, 2012 GREEK MYTHOLOGY I-Search! We had to do an I-Search! I was so exhausted when I went to Mr. Hewett’s LA and SS class. I had woken up early to go for tennis and now I had to do an I-Search! What is an I-Search anyway? I thought. I didn’t have to wait long before I learned the answer to that. An I-search was just a big research project where we could choose anything that interested us and research about it. What should my topic be? I wondered. I didn’t really start to focus on finding an I-Search topic until Monday, January 16. That was when I began to feel the pressure. I had to find a topic before the end of class. That was five minutes! I took some time to think… and got it! I had read a book called “Percy Jackson” which spoke about Gods, demigods, and demons. That interested me, so I decided to do “Greek Mythology.” But, that was too broad. I could research forever before I had learned everything about that. So, to narrow it down I thought of the different Gods and Goddesses and chose Goddess Rhea. Why did I choose Rhea? I chose Goddess Rhea because my name is Katrina Rhea Nielsen. I started to wonder if my parents had named me after this Goddess. Would I like what I found out about Rhea? I was sure I did not have any Greek relatives. So, how had my Danish-Indian parents named me Rhea? So, where should I start? I started by talking to my brother, Rehan. Rehan, I knew had gone through a Percy Jackson phase, and had been obsessed with Greek Gods and Goddesses. It turned out that my little brother was interested more in Zeus than in Rhea. But he did tell me that Rhea was the wife of Cronus and the mother of Zeus. And that she had hidden Zeus to save him from being swallowed by Cronus. Why would a father want to swallow his children? I thought. And Cronus was not just a father but also a God. Weren’t Gods supposed to be good? I did not like the sound of Cronus but I liked Rhea for trying to save her child. She sounded brave. Now I was really interested. My first impression about Rhea was positive. I wanted to know more about her. What was the significance of Goddess Rhea in Greek mythology and why do the Greeks worship her? This was going to be my guiding question. For my research, I first needed to make a note of what I knew for sure about my guiding question, what I thought I knew, some wild guesses, and finally what I needed to know. So I started by noting down what I knew for sure. What I knew for sure was very little. I knew that she was a Greek goddess, the sister-wife of Cronus, and the mother of Zeus, Hera, Hestia, Demeter, Hades, and Poseidon. I also knew, Cronus was afraid that he would be overthrown by his children so he swallowed them as soon as they were born. Rhea disagreed with this behavior and hid Zeus when he was born so he wouldn’t get swallowed too. Rhea, I thought, was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus. I also thought Rhea may have been a brave and daring Goddess for hiding her child, Zeus. Perhaps, she was a fierce Goddess, I guessed. Zeus was a fierce God, so I assumed Rhea, his mother, must have been fierce too. Finally I made a note of what I needed to know. Since I didn’t know much about Goddess Rhea that was a lot. Who was Rhea, what was she like, why did the Greeks worship her, what was her relationship with the other gods and goddesses? I knew that most Greek gods and goddess had a weapon special to them. Did Rhea have a weapon? What was it? Gods in Greek Mythology could be good or bad. Was Rhea one of the good gods? These things were important for me to learn. Would I like my namesake after I learned about her? This, I wanted to know. Then, between part two and three, there was some time we took to research about our guiding question. I gathered all my sources and went through them noting down things I thought were important to know about Rhea. But, there was a problem. All my sources said exactly the same things, so when I had finished looking through my sources, I didn’t have more than fourteen points. And, when I went to the library to find more information, everywhere the authors were just repeating what I already knew. But something good came out of all of this. I knew all my information was credible. The sources I used were, Gods, Demigods, And Demons, an Encyclopedia of Greek Mythology, Greek and Human Mythology A- Z, gogreece.about.com, and www.worldbookonline.com. Gods, Demigods, and Demons, An encyclopedia of Greek Mythology was written by Bernard Evslin. Bernard Evslin (1916-1993) is a well known writer, best known for his adaptations on Greek mythology and has written about 70 books on Greek mythology. So I had no doubts about this information. Kathleen N. Daly wrote Greek and Roman Mythology A- Z. Kathleen N. Daly is an author of children’s books and books for young adults. She has written books like The four little kittens, and Where Do Animals Live? No further information about this author was available. This made me wonder if this was credible. Another of my sources was, gogreece.about.com. This gave me some fast facts about Rhea. The information I was provided from this source was repeated in my other sources, so I knew it was credible. www.worldbookonline.com told me similar things as my other information did, so I knew this was also credible. My advice to you would be to pick a topic and a guiding question that you are truly interested in because if you aren’t really interested in what you choose, you will find this project boring and you will not enjoy yourself. Also, if you cannot find enough information in the school library, try other resources such as the internet and books at home. I believe that Rhea was an important Goddess in Greek Mythology who carried out a significant role. And I am going to prove this in my thesis. Rhea was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus. She was married to her brother Cronus. Cronus was afraid he would get overthrown by his children because, he overthrew his father. To prevent the same from happening to him, he swallowed his children once they were born. Rhea and Cronus had six children, Hera, Hestia, Demeter, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus (Rhea, 1994). Cronus swallowed five of them. But when Zeus was born, Rhea hid him in Crete. When Zeus had grown up, he overthrew Cronus, rescued his siblings, and they had a ten years long battle against him and the other titans called the Titanomachy (Willard, 2010). Later, Zeus became the ruler of the Titans. (Evslin, 1975). I also learned about how she looked, her strengths, weaknesses, and a fact I thought was funny. It said Rhea was beautiful, motherly but weak for putting up with Cronus eating her children for far too long. It mentioned that her strengths were she was crafty, daring, and a fertile mother goddess. This is also what my thesis is about. What I found funny was that Rhea is sometimes confused with Gaia, her mother, because they are both mother goddesses believed to rule over heaven and Earth. The site also mentioned that the symbol for Rhea may be her holding a stone wrapped in cloth (“baby Zeus”) or seated on a lion. Lions are known as the King of animals, so the fact that she sits on one may also mean she was brave (Regula). Rhea showed courage and love when she saved Zeus from Cronus. This would have put her in danger but, she chose to do what she believed in. This shows Rhea to be of strong character. In Greek mythology Zeus is worshipped as the ruler of the Titans. But, had Rhea not saved Zeus, he would not have existed. Rhea was the Earth Goddess (Nardo, 1947). So, she was also a goddess of her own right. I think this proves that Rhea was not only a good mother but, a strong and courageous goddess. The Greeks worship Rhea with wild and enthusiastic ceremonies. I think she deserves this. And I am happy to be named after her. BIBLIOGRAPHY Dictionary of Mythology Rhea. In (1994). Dictionary of mythology (1 ed. p. 144). Part I: Earth has 4.6 billion years history. It’s pretty long amount of time for history, and it has not even reached 10 centuries after the investigation of clocks and watches. Before the clocks and watches were invented, I see how people might’ve suffered just because they couldn’t know the time. Of all the topics, the best reason that I chose this topic is that I wanted to dig up the whole large history of clock and watches. I always go crazy when somebody invents something very complicated. I wonder how they could’ve thought to make such a great invention. I think that I’m born in the time period which is comfortable to live; because I definitely would’ve not invented clock and watches at that time. I loved the topic because, the invention of clocks and watches is great itself. I wonder how they figured out how to make the little parts and made them work. Actually, to be honest, there isn’t a real good reason that I chose this topic. It wasn’t that I have wanted to do a research about this specific topic. Though, I wanted get some sense about how the machines work, and I though clocks and watches were fitting in the best. I feel dumfounded when I look something doing an amazing thing happening automatically. I wonder how that works; and clocks certainly are one of them. Starting with this topic, or making out with this topic was really hard. It was like I had to live in the North Pole with shorts. It was a tall wall to climb. It is hard, because we can not use Google or other sites and get information from the first link it shows. I didn’t even start researching about my topic, but I think I’m good on this topic (perhaps hard but good) because it’s okay if others don’t like it. It’s just that matters if I like it. I don’t know whether others like mine, but I think I’m ready to take some information and paraphrase them.

Part II: I admit that my guiding question isn’t that great. I admit it that it isn’t so great. I am also not that satisfied about my guiding question; because my guiding question is: “What is the history of the invention and development of the clock?” The facts are mostly basic. So, the person who invented the clock is John Harrison. He was a sailor, but he had few big problems about his sailings. He had to know the exact location where he was, in other words he had the problem of the longitude. The second problem seems to be the matter of the time. I think this comes to the reason that he invented the clock. The Clock was invented for people to know the time, the exact time. The clock was made out of a lot of gears moving themselves and the gears next to them. When there are enough batteries, the gears starts to turn, and you can control the time into the right time. There several lines in this Earth and each line keep some distance. Each line tells different time. So the world’s times are not the same. Back to the clocks and watches, the earliest watch had no design compared to the modern ones. As the invention developed, people started to use a lot of watches. After few centuries, digital clocks where in sale. Many people should’ve used the digital watches, because it had much more features than the analog clocks. Stopwatches, lights, date, and so on. Going on, my dead wrong wild guesses are: 1) Clocks are just used for alarms. 2) The clock has the definition of showing and telling the time. 3) Watch probably means mini-clock. 4) Clocks are used to help people get to a place on time. I’m not a genius; especially, I’m working on a topic that I don’t know so much about it. So, I have some greedy minds that I want to know about this thing. I am very curious about clocks and watches. I was to ask five questions about my topic, I would ask: How did people get on a place without any clock? What are the differences between modern clocks and watches and the early clocks and watches? Where the clocks and watches were used the most often? How long did it take for the whole earth to invent clocks and watches? How did they calculate the time when there weren’t any clocks and watches?
Part III: Researching is a hard task. It’s not what something you get by punching in the keyboard about your research topic. It’s been since I ever done research, and now I have the conflict. Research is digging information that you don’t know about, and getting to know them. In order for a good research, you need to cross reference, which basically means multiple resources research. So, there is a disadvantage about this research. You cannot use Google to find the information for our topic. We have to use the library webpath express for the resources, the book resources, and the online subscriptions. Even prior to that, I admit that I had problems which I encountered. For example, I had some hard time getting my book resources. I borrowed the best one that fits in my topic, then waited for some time; and I got a book that was really descriptive that it’ll take half a year for me to finish it. First, I have some good and bad news for my research; the good news is that I got a good thick new book that was explaining the history of watches. I was so excited, because it was really thick, so I thought that I would get a lot of information. Here’s the bad news: There were only the watches that were invented, and its description. The first two paragraphs were the good information, and the rest was junk of watches’ picture and small dsescriptoin.
Other that, the book seemed to be a level for 8th or 9th graders. It was very wordy, and it was hard to even understand it. It was a challenging obstacle that I had to overcome.
I haven’t gone through all of my sites, but I’m in the progress. Another obstacle is that I have in total three sites, which is basic; but then, one site has good detailed information, but the other two didn’t include information that the one site included. So, I think that’ll be hard to find accurate information.
So, that’ll do it for my obstacles, and going on, people think different, which makes different perspectives for people. Now, a perspective is the point of view. So, by meaning that, some people think that watches might be part of decorations or even part of their fashion. Some people might think like their treasure, or perhaps just ordinary machine that they don’t keep any mind on it.
As you see, there can be a lot of perspectives. In, 1761 (Yeah, I know that this is part of my research), John Harrison, a sailor created a sea clock because there was the matter of time, but mainly because of his personal sailing problems and longitude.
Even before John Harrison’s sea clock, people had worked very hard to know the time exactly. The manufacturers and the watchmakers have worked very hard to create a watch. Their perspective in making watches was to know the time.
I struggled to know that my information was true. I’m still not clear yet. Though, the only way that I can make sure that my information is true is cross referencing. Cross referencing means finding the same information in particular sites.
I think I’m on the track, by finding some information that they truly help me, but the information seems to be really long in fact.
Part IIII- My guiding question: What is the history of the invention and the development of clock and watches? My Thesis Statement: The history of clocks and watches is very long. At first they weren’t reliable, but they have become quite precise in modern times. Proving My Thesis Statement: Clocks and watches have a long history, because people suffered to know the timein the early days. Time is important, because there are a lot of things to use time. We use time to divide our schedule, to sleep, or to eat, and the study of time was called, “Horology.” Clocks and watches were made by prior to 1600. Before that, people used other tools to measure or indicate the passage of time. The earliest type of timekeeper, dating from as far back as 3500 B.C., was the shadow clock, or gnomon, a vertical stick or obelisk that casts a shadow. After the long time, people estimated the time by looking at the stars. Before going into information, there are some basic parts you need to know: clocks and watches are divided into two parts: analog and digital. Analog clocks and watches are classical and been used for a long time. The main springs and the weights stand for analog clocks’ main power source. The digital clocks and watches are the modern ones; batteries work for digital clocks and watches’ main power source. The way analog clocks represent the times are by using the needles ticking. That indicates a time to time. 3 needles were threw in them: the needle representing the hour, the minute, the second. Just to be sure, watches weren’t thought by specific person. It is the small form of clocks. The watches were created after people thought that clocks were too big to carry with them. Though, the first watches also weren’t the type of watches that we have in these days. They were as big as clocks, but a little smaller.
Basically, this is how analog clocks and watches work: The escape wheel (it’s the type of a wheel that every analog clocks and watches contain), and it is connected to the train, and also gives energy to the balance wheel. It turns when the watch is running. The balance wheel gets the help from balance spring to turn, and that’s where the time accuracy comes from. The pallet lever has two hooks, and one of them stick out to the escape wheel. When the balance wheels spin, the pallet lever’s forced to spin together. Meanwhile the pallet lever turns, the escape wheel escapes the grip of the pallet lever. The escape wheel then turns slightly before the pallets again catch on it. This action of the pallet lever catching the escape wheel makes the characteristics of ticking of the mechanical watches. When it was about 1600, the first watches and clocks were invented. The invention however had many disadvantages compared to the modern ones. 2 wounds were in the clocks and watches every day, and the time wasn’t so accurate because the early ones had undeveloped balance spring. The balance spring didn’t make the clocks’ and watches’ time so accurate, and that made the watchmakers and manufacturers to use only the needle which represents hour. Also, they weren’t small enough to bring the items with them. European people, who has developed clocks and watches added the fourth wheel (it’s a part of a gear perhaps), which made the clocks and watches to get only one wound per day. People were so meticulous about clocks and watches. The watchmakers and manufacturers wanted perfect clocks and watches. They couldn’t make the perfect ones, but as people’s thought and the technology developed, the clocks and watches also developed along. It got a lot better. First, there were no more wound, and they developed the balance spring, which made the time more accurate, which let the watchmakers and manufacturers add the needle representing the minute. As people got capable of making better watches, they started to work on decorations, so it might attract people’s eyes. After they put gems like quartz, ruby, topaz, the scale of the cost of the clocks and watches difference got really big. Clocks and watches without gems cost only up to 100$ for maximum, but clocks and watches with so many rare gems even went up to 10,000 $. Isn’t it so strange? The clocks and watches are just the same, but the cost difference was so big? It might be because the gems were really hard to get and shape them, but also people who bought them thought that those clocks and watches were part of their fashion. In 1761, a sailor called, “John Harrison” came with the sea clock. The reason why he made the clock might’ve been his personal problems in sailing. The clock was perfect; although it had only one problem; it was too big. Anyway, mathematicians, scientists, manufacturers, and watchmakers were surprised by John Harrison’s invention. The clock had different variety of measuring the time. The sea clock measured the flowing of the water, and snapped the time. It worked pretty good, and he made out with the same sea clocks, but more developed. Anyway, as time started to approach to the modern days, clocks and watches developed into successful machine that all people used.

I-Search ;D As I was listening to Mr. Hewett about his introduction to I-Search, I was wondering why school is so boring. Well I already had so much homework and everything. I really hope that we didn’t have these projects coming. I have to work too hard. Anyway as I listened I was thinking of many topics. Ps1, Hamsters, Google, Steve Jobs, Cats, Animals, Earth, Me, Barney, Movie, so much more. BANG!!!!! My head went BANG!!!!! What do I choose! I just pushed these thoughts away and thought its ok I can think one later. Maybe I am a lost moment boy. The bell rang. I raced across the room, left my laptop in the cart, searched for the charging wire. Couldn’t find, who cares! I went running towards my locker. I could hear Aaron’s footsteps clumping behind me. I ran so fast that my heart started pumping so much that I thought my heart is going to break through my ribs and come out of my body. I went straight to my locker place but to my disappointment I found a boy who was already in the 6th grade locker place, opening his locker combination and it looked like he was so in urgency that he would bend and break his locker. Whew, I lost again. Man I need to work on this thing. Anyway the rest of the day went normal and as usual. I went home and, I did all my homework and I finished my badminton class. I did this all so quickly so that I can do Facebook. Talking about Facebook I can go on forever. But still I like it. It just pulls me everyday into it. I don’t know why I like it, because when you think about it, it’s nothing. That’s why I didn’t have a Facebook account until when I was 11. I can’t stop, because something inside me doesn’t let me stop. Maybe that’s why I like Facebook so much. Let me get into the topic. As I was too busy looking at the comments on Facebook for my video, my mom sneaked into my bag and took out my planner. She had carefully gone through the planner and asked me, “Have you done your homework?”I replied “yes. All good!”, “Good! How about I-search?” That stumped me. I had to think of something because I didn’t do it. I quickly said,” Yes”. Mom said, “What is it about?” I thought, this lady can be a detective or something! I thought of something quick! What can I say! And finally I found the answer on my computer screen. “Um, F-F-Facebook!” I said. “Oh, nice!” She replied. Ok now the story begins. First of all I didn’t know why I said that, second of all, I didn’t want to do that topic! Ahhhhh man! I slept that night and as the day went on I thought about it. Why can’t I do Facebook as my topic, it’s being used more than 500 MILLION people! And soon guess what I said. I said, you know what Kaviyan, You have the best topic! As you know there are many things I know about Facebook because I have a Facebook account. Something I can be sure of is that Facebook was invented by a Harvard student. Also I know that you need Internet connection for Facebook, quite obvious because when my internet is gone I can’t go to Facebook. Also I am 100% sure you need to sign up for Facebook. There are many other things I am sure of. Facebook is free and that’s one thing I can be sure of. There are many other social Networks and they are not that successful and many other social networks came even before Facebook but they were not that successful. Even though I have tried many other social networks, Facebook stands out of them all. Also one of the most important things is Facebook is free. Maybe it won’t be after some years but for now let’s believe Facebook’s quote: It's free and always will be. Also I think Facebook started with some people using it and many people started using it. I think this is possible because I have heard about this before. There are so many thoughts I can think of which might be true or not. I also think that Facebook was only used to post ideas and what you’re doing and then it went to photos and everything. I think this is true because when I post something there is more option for it than other things like games. The person who created Facebook worked alone to invent it because all people who like Facebook only talk about Mark Zuckerburg. Just for additional information I think he was the world’s youngest richest man. I think Facebook just ended in luck and it wasn’t meant to be that way and that can be one of my wild guess. There are also many wild guesses I can make which is worth the time to explore like these. There was no Mark Zuckerburg there was no Facebook. If Mark didn’t go to Harvard he would have made a better Facebook because as far as I know, most of the professors in Harvard didn’t want Mark to do and make computer softwares. Also to conclude my wild guesses I think Facebook will not end in a thousand years. There is so many things if need to know about Facebook and that’s mostly why I chose Facebook as my topic. Most of the things I need to know are on the wild guesses above. I need to know the procedure Facebook was invented and how it started and where and why. So I think that will explain most of it. Hope I will learn answers to these facts. As I was busy with all the research I had to do, One of the main was the actually research part of it. I had to do lot of judging, I will explain later how that went. It’s called cross referencing. I had tech issues of course like everyone will when they do a project. But the main thing was the panic or the stress when something happens that makes you blank. I had one of these incidents when I had lost my whole research and luckily I had backup. It might sound easy but when that happens it often leads t stress and frustration. I also had problem staying in the topic. As I mentioned before cross referencing was a big problem I had. So cross referencing practically means to check if information is correct. It’s usually done by seeing if information is more than one place or maybe where the information is from [website, books]. I do that to all my information so that my information can be true. I did my best to do that. Well, when we see Facebook, there is many ways of looking at it. I know it’s hard to think. Same thing happened to me. But as I was going on with my research I found out that there are actually many ways of looking at it. First there is a researcher way of looking and that’s me. I will probably take out my bias [opinions] to make it a fact not an opinion. I don’t want to be on one side and say that’s the best. I can look at the other social networks who think they are better or the people who don’t like Facebook and they think it was luck. Also people who like it and they think it’s unique and it deserves millions of people. There were sometimes I ran into bias, an opinion of people or a person. This I think mostly relates to the above paragraph. There were two to three which I found. I only got that much because I only looked at reliable websites I think. I am now telling you that Facebook was a total luck!! That’s an example of bias. Now that I am telling my problems and I am going through the thing I did, I will tell you some advice which must help. That a bias. Anyway I think my advice might help. Choose a topic which really interests you and do the typing before the last minute. I strongly state that Facebook started out small and then went popular and huge. It is obvious when you look at it. Of course Zuckerberg, didn’t become a millionaire right without any work. And Facebook didn’t have a million users right after it started. So its quit clear that Facebook went from small to big steps, in other words Facebook started out small and then went popular and huge, which is my thesis statement. So far my research is directed by one question and it’s what is the history of Facebook and how was it invented? This question connects to all my research and it is the help and maybe even the guide. Maybe that’s why it’s called guiding question. My essential question is clear. What is the history of Facebook and how it was invented? The answer to this is also as clear as the question. It started out small and then became popular mostly by student who first used it and also media. And then the world found it interesting and stated using it. So it took small steps and then took large once which most people say is luck and some people say is true hard work. This connects to bias, which I said before. As I said before and now Facebook started out small and went big. To prove this I have many things. One of the main on is Direct and indirect quotations. This was very hard to find and not a lot were there, but as I was looking I managed to get some. One was “Children who dream of becoming president to be careful what they post on the social-networking site, because their photos and comments could come back to haunt you.”- Barack Obama. As I was doing research I found this and I thought it was great that the president Posted that and it is a good warning because if U.S President tells that you better watch out! “Tell your story”- Michael Phelps. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has one of the most popular Facebook Pages in the world, with over 2.8 million fans. He uses Facebook as an online diary, talking about his experiences, and sharing videos of himself and pictures from his sponsorships (one has him eating a hot dog at Subway). Now let’s see how it all actually happened, let’s go in my research. Instead of mixing all the information together I will include and go in first to last. , Mark is born. Mark was a boy who lived and studied in Harvard. He is a different boy than the others; he has been like that since he was born. He was born on May 14, 1984, White Plains, New York. He was deeply interested in computer programming and he actually was a computer programmer. He had a messy room and his mom was often embarrassed when she came and visited him. He did many programs and one of them was Face Mash. It was an illegal program and was son shut down. He is kind of naughty but in the other hand he is kind too. He donates and does much other stuff. He grew up and soon in 2004 made a website called The Facebook. It was founded by him, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. They were all students of Harvard. So in 2004 The Facebook was founded at Harvard. You might be wondering why is The Facebook and not Facebook, soon in 2005 the name changed to just Facebook. As Facebook was doing good Harvard classmates Cameroon and Tyler Winklevoss sue that Mark stole the idea and the code for Facebook from them. It soon settled down. In 2003 Facebook added a privacy setting to friends and that helped in being close with who you want and who you want to keep a distance with. Soon in 2009 as users started to increase Facebook added a “like” feature. This was really helpful for many people. There is also even more increase in users because of this. When I talk about relationships in Facebook, there are many ways to improve your connection in Facebook. You and gift someone and they will accept it. Soon people started giving gifts which costs. “These gifts were real deal”- Dan, F. (2010) But some people think [bias] Its a risk spending money on electronic gifts like roses, pets, Farmville {game} equipment, etc... Because they might accidently reject it or might not go to the person’s profile. That’s what I think too. Facebook also started business and it opened Marketplace which allowed users to post add for free. They could post something there the whole word will see it. It was a real deal. Facebook made a big change on Earth, by many ways like connecting to your friends and the way you spend time on your computer. Some people think this is not true but some people say Facebook really deserves this place and it is nice, in other words it rocks. Some people say there are other social networks but Facebook stands out, others say that Facebook was luck because there are many other social networks like Facebook. Yes these are bias. So I conclude that Facebook had to go through lot of steps and had a strong success. Was it a luck or true hard work you decide? But one thing is for sure it started out small and went big like I said before. Hanson, Jarice. "Zuckerberg, Mark." World Book Student. World Book, 2012. Web. 16 Feb. 2012. Facebook. (2012). I Search- Greek Goddess Athena The day Mr. Hewett told us we would be starting a huge research report, my stomach was in knots. I had no idea what to even write about. I had gone home for some inspiration and my mind went blank. After a long time of thought I had three ideas, Indian dance, Indian language, and pneumonia. I thought I should do pneumonia because I could relate to it. I had pneumonia when I was in 5th grade and I had to stay in the hospital for a week! A whole week! When we went to the library for the Pre-Search, I was sure I would find something on Indian dance. So there I was, in the library searching on the library catalogue, typing in keywords about the topics I had chosen. “Indian Classical Dance” is what I first punched in on the computer. There were a couple books on that but I found one related to South Indian classical dance and decided to look for it. I looked around the non-fiction section for the book, but I couldn’t find it. I looked and looked and looked. No sign of it at all! Amidst all this searching, I saw something that caught my eye, a book of Greek Myths. Right then and there I knew I wanted to do something about Greek mythology. Greek mythology has interested me since 3rd grade. We were learning a little about Gods and Goddesses and I really liked that topic. I had no idea why I hadn’t thought of Greek mythology before. So, I picked up the book and went back to computer. After searching through it for a little I realized that it was a little too hard, so I searched “Greek Myths” and found this famous book on Greek Myths and decided it was the perfect book for me! Now, I had to narrow down my topic because this was way too broad! There has been one goddess that has interested me a lot and that is Athena. The goddess Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war. There was only one problem about this topic; there wasn’t enough information in this book I picked out. Now I had to hunt around the library for the perfect book. I was like an explorer hunting for animals, but in this case, books. Then I found a couple of other books that I thought were pretty exciting and had some more information about Athena and I felt proud of myself! I scanned through the form the Mr. Hewett gave us to fill out and suddenly realized I needed a guiding question! I sat there staring at the form with an empty mind, trying to think of a guiding question. After what seemed like forever, I came up with “How is Athena important to Greek Mythology and Ancient Greeks?” To be honest Mr. Hewett helped me with the last part! So basically my I-Search topic went from Indian Dance, to Athena and Greek mythology. My guiding question of How is Athena important to Greek mythology and Ancient Greeks? Has a lot to unfold about it. I know for sure that Athena is the goddess of war and wisdom and that many people worshipped her. I also know that Athena was “born” by Zeus since he swallowed the pregnant wife. I don’t think that really relates to my guiding question, but it might help me later on. I think that Athena has something to do with the city Athens and she is worshipped by people there. I am thinking this because Athens and Athena. They have a relationship with their names so it seems like it correlates. I also think that Athena has some kind of relationship to the other gods like Poseidon and evil people like Medusa. I heard somewhere from someone some time ago that Athena had a fight with Poseidon or something like that, so maybe that was for something important and she won or lost. I guess you could also call that a wild guess but it is also what I think I know. Wild guesses for me are fun. It lets my imagination come in but yet, I am still serious. A wild guess about Athena could be that she is a goddess that could be a good ruler so somehow she tried for it in a war or argument and either got what she wanted or didn’t, its quite simple in this perspective. I think she is a good ruler because goddess of wisdom kind of makes me thinks she can be good at making battle strategies and at the same time still being able to execute the plan. I need to know more about how people worship Athena. Do they have sacrifices, or religious ceremonies to gods/goddesses? Where is Athena famous and are there different ways they see her? All of that will be necessary to know since my guiding question is How is Athena important to Greek mythology and the Ancient Greeks. What I stated above has to do with how she is important to the Ancient Greeks. Another thing I absolutely need to know is, about her background. Maybe like her family how she became goddess of war and wisdom and all that. I know how she was born but if she had any siblings to support her or anything else about that. That helps me know is her family had anything to do with who she is. Do the Ancient Greeks worship different gods or goddesses? Does each individual have a favorite? Who do most of them like? That will help me understand is people really do know her. The last thing I think I need to know is if Athena has done anything bad. If a god or goddess has done anything bad or disobeyed rules of orders, usually people don’t see them as good people and have sudden hatred for them. If Athena is one of those people, people have a different image and they automatically shun them. I had to overcome many obstacles in my road to success. The thing is I haven’t gotten there yet because there was a lot I have to touch up and there was a long way to go. When I was researching I didn’t find much that would be helpful to me. My books didn’t have much information either. I had three whole books and maybe only one had enough information. But that was before. Later I realized I had to look for multiple perspectives. From what I found, it looked as if nothing there showed at how she was important, but if you look at it from the perspective of ancient Greek people, they probably believed all this stuff was true and that Athena is real and she really does these things. When I was researching about Athena, I was looking for bias, you know, because Mr. Hewett wants us to try and find bias. The thing is that when you are searching myths, or mythology, it is kind of hard to find bias since it’s all made up. Myths aren’t true, they are what ancient Greeks thought was real. They believed that all this about Athena was true, when it is most likely not. Athena is most likely not a person who comes down to Earth and marries a mortal and has kids. That is what most myths say most of the gods do. (Including Athena) A reflection of my work will be a pretty funny one. I have ups and downs with my parts. It might have been that I didn’t understand the guidelines or my writing had its ups and downs. My personal reflection overall though, would probably be that I think I did OK. Not amazing but not the worst report ever! My advice for others is a lot, so I will sum it up in this paragraph. Choose a guiding question you are really interested in. if you don’t then your report won’t turn out as good as it can be. Maybe I wasn’t so keen on doing Athena, but I was almost time to go and I couldn’t find anything else that interested me. Another piece of advice is that don’t rush through your research or your report because, as I said before, it won’t turn out as good as it can and once you get your grade for the once specific part, you can’t change it. Also, don’t think it is just a piece of cake, because it isn’t. It takes a lot of time and effort so put your best in it. It will count as your Language Arts and Social Studies grade. So do your best, work hard, and get a good grade! Here are the findings of my research. My guiding question is, How is Athena important to Greek mythology and Ancient Greeks? I have found many different answers to that in different perspectives. My thesis statement is, Athena was the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy so she helped the Ancient Greeks win the wars and she also assisted them. She is also famous for being a goddess born from Zeus. During my research I found some things that weren’t really important, or wouldn’t lead me in the right direction. But, I put them down anyways just in case. Now, I have marked what is important, and what isn’t. Here is something important about Athena that you must know. She is not the goddess of fighting in war, but of war planning, or battle strategy (Felson,2012) She also made many helpful inventions to help the Ancient Greeks, which proves the part of my thesis that says “she assisted them” Her inventions include the plow, flute, art of taming animals, building ships and making shoes. (Athena,2002) Of course these are all just myths and she could or could not have made these inventions. One thing Athena was really famous for was being actually born from Zeus. The myth goes along like Zeus was in fear that Metis, his wife, would give birth to a son mightier than him so he swallowed her thinking it would stop her from giving birth. But then one day Zeus had a horrible headache and someone cracked his skull open, and out came Athena fully dressed and fully grown. But this is just a myth, and probably isn’t true. (Athena,2002) She is also the patron goddess of Athens. There is a story about how her and Poseidon were fighting for it. Not literally fighting though. (Tucciancardi,1999) She gave the people of Athens an Olive Tree which provided them with wood and olives. Poseidon gave a spring, but the water was too salty, like his oceans, so it was no use to them. Since she became patron goddess of Athens, on the silver coins they had her attribute, the owl, put on it. This symbolizes Athena. (Carr,2012) Athena has a big part in an ancient Greek literature called the Oddyssey. To go in to details about The Oddyssey, would be like a whole new topic for the I-Search! From what little research I did on the Oddyssey I found out that she helps somebody who is like the “main character” defeat the enemies of the main character. (Carr,2012) This doesn’t mean that the enemies were bad though… Importance is a big thing with gods and goddesses. Athena was very important. Another word to describe her is trustworthy. The people of Athens let her plan their wars trusting her to do a good job, use her olive tree which they had to trust to be good and healthy. This shows how she is important. But what shows how she is really important and trustworthy is that Zeus trusted her with his master lightning bolt. His bolt is very powerful, and if it was in the wrong hands, bad things would happen. (Athena,2002) Related to the topic of importance, the Athenian people made a temple called the Parthenon to thank her for the Olive Tree. An exact replica can be seen in Tennessee. The Parthenon was built on top of what is supposed to be a famous hill called the Akropolis. Next to the Parthenon on Akropolis was a statue of Athena. Her armor was made of gold and her flesh or ivory. The Athenian people made this to show their respect to her. This statue is long gone now, and its gold and ivory were probably stolen and sold at a high price. (Powell,2009) All this has supported my thesis statement of, Athena was the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy so she helped the Ancient Greeks win the wars and she also assisted them. Athena was a very powerful goddess in all of the myths and stories. She wasn’t evil or as sweet as an angel either. She was always in between. My point here is that even though Athena had some ups and downs, she still came out strong and helped many people. All of the information above is examples, and there is much more out there that maybe I didn’t read about. Later on when I have time, I would like to research some more about Athena. Vikram Sivakumar January 24, 2012 The Story of My Passion My story starts out way back then when I was three and in St. Louis. I wasn’t the smartest baby you could say, but the one thing I was good at was Baseball and I was great at it with all my friends playing with me in my back yard. This is the story of my passion. I loved baseball with all my heart and it kept me alive and going. This was always the reason I loved baseball. It all started out when mom took me to the dug out of the St. Louis Cardinals and there I saw the team that plays hard to make our city proud and happy. This was always my dream to see them in person and it turned out to come true and I was the happiest person on the planet. Since then I devoted my life to baseball. As you know my story of my passion is very short, but don’t worry there is a lot more to go. Personally, the biggest moment I had was with my dad and this story will tell you about the grand click for my life and it was phenomenal. It started one day in the little city I lived in St. Louis. It was a bright morning and the sun was coming up and the alarm didn’t ring strangely so I woke up because this was usually the time I wake up. So I was saying, I walked down stairs, but I saw something strange, a figure to be exact. I ran for my life to try to tell my dad, but my dad wasn’t there. I took a look at it again and there my dad was! He was watching a sport but I didn’t know which sport that was and I walked closer and closer as the men on the screen were having sticks in their hands whacking a white stone, but it was a ball, luckily I was three. I kept walking closer and closer until something moved and this time it wasn’t my dad and trust me I was really scared. Then, my dad saw me in silence and said,” Vikram!!”. I felt my life flash through my life at that moment and it was really long surprisingly. Then I said, “Dad, dad, dad, dad.” Before you know it I fainted and 20 minutes later I found myself face to screen on my dad’s lap and he showed me everything about my baseball that was the greatest moment of my life and I’m glad my dad was in it. I chose this for my I search topic because it lets me remember the bond that my dad and I have. Some things I know about my guiding question are that that the sport I had to overcome is America’s past time I know that it talks about how this sport developed in America and how did it change over time. For example, the helmets were made with a cap structure and harder than rock, but were having a lack of having protection of the face .Now they have separate helmets and caps, the caps are stronger and are there to cover the face. I know this for sure because I read this in a book. This is what I know, something’s I might know sounds a little bit hard. Something’s I might know about my guiding question is that might tell me where it was made, because if I know who made it I would know where it was made. Furthermore I think it might tell me how the rules changed over time, since its telling me how it changed over time It should tell me how it was from then to now, from the day it was created until today. Now, that didn’t seem so hard with my luck so let’s go to the fun part about this. The wild guesses! Now it’s time for the fun part, let’s go and make some wild guesses. First, I guess that my guiding question will tell me about the logos or the patches on the shirts and caps. Next, I would guess how were the bats made back then till now, were they metal? , How were the fans dressed up back then? I will need to find the things that will help me keep going in the I- search .First it would be how the materials made from then to now. Furthermore I think that the Negro league will help me a lot Next it’s about the rules changing over time. Furthermore, I think it’s probably best that I go with how they converted to the two separate leagues. Last, I know that how the hats were made is great to have in here. I had to overcome a few obstacles in the process of my research and it was tough for me to get around. First I had a lot of trouble trying to cross reference which got me at a disadvantage, but what I learned is that it’s, because I had too much of the same information which made it hard to find out. Furthermore, coming from the last sentence I had the problem of having to grab a lot of information. Resolved this by getting an actual book with had a lot of baseballs history in it and what happened was it got a lot of facts for me that were different from the others. That was a big hurdle of problems I leaped and I’m lucky to still be in the game. Now I am going to move on to the next part which is the part about cross referencing. This is a little bit hard to understand, but let’s see how it turns out for me. Cross referencing credit is a nice way to find out if information is true or not, so that was easy towards the research and that helped me tell right from wrong. For example, I wasn’t sure about the information one of the library catalogue sites gave me, then I went to “Encyclopedia Britannica’ and that really helped me to go further into the guiding question that I chose. Next it comes up to the scary part of the I-search, the perspectives and I am scared of the way of seeing things. Still, can’t count your chickens before they hatch. Let’s proceed to the next step. Perspectives are the way I see things or you see things from a different view. Let’s start with how A.G. Spalding wanted to promote Baseball as an American sport. He wanted to only find the American sport; he could have thought like that and made the sport for Americans, but the people from England could have thought, “Oh, they copied the sport off cricket and rounders, and that makes a big conflict off the same thing in totally different sides. Who knew a result like that would come from this. This is also an example of bias. So, I would recommend doing this because it’s easy and hard, because you choose the topic which is fun and challenging to you. Also, I would recommend this because of all the challenges you face and how much you try, but it keeps smacking you back which makes it fun. I think I picked the right topic to go with and I’m glad that this is a chance to show how well my research skills are to myself. Next is I-I-search part four. So, until now you haven’t been reading my research results, but the process, passion, and the steps it took me to get to this point in the project, the awesomeness, the finisher, the big cohune, and so on, but this is part four of my I-search and this is going to sum everything up that I have been working for the past two months and I have come to a statement that sums my research to come to an equivalent thesis which will guide you through reading this. Base ball has made changes since the sport was made and is the most known sport in America and Canada now. Also, has even become famous in Japan. You can say that this is really America’s past time. To start things off I am going to talk about the materials like the bats, gloves, and helmets. The thing I saw about this is very interesting, so pay attention. First, bats were only made of three layers, but now they are almost made of fifteen different layers including the core of the bat. Furthermore, they used a stone with rubber on it to make it a baseball or at least something strong enough, while on the other hand we have strong baseballs that are made of genuine leather and are in the highest condition. Last but not least the mitts weren’t even invented until the late 1800s; that’s stranger than it sounds, believe me you don’t want to know. This shows that baseball has evolved over so much time. The history of how the sport began is a different story though. This story is twisted up. So first it originated from a British game called Rounders. Then Albert Doubleday came in 1839 and invented the first set off rules, but the people weren’t familiar. Then, A.G. Spalding came and hired a group of people to look only at the American history for the Americans development in the sport. That worked, but the true hero of baseball was Alexander J. Cawright. He established the rules just fine and now those rules are still played in the major leagues and they were all from 1845. That’s a shaky start, but a great ending.
