1. Why did surpluses lead to the growth of trade? With the surpluses in the villages they had extra goods, so they were ok to give it away for things they needed. For example if they had extra food and they needed cotton, they could trade their food for somebody with a surplus of cotton. Surpluses were very important in early communities. 2. What evidence do we have that leads us to believe that Catal Huyuk was a complex village? Catal Huyuk was on a marshy area. We know this because there were water bird bones which show that it’s a marshy area. Another thing is that they found shrines in the ruins of Catal Huyuk. They know it’s a shrine, because there were food offerings inside. We also know they buried there people because there was a stamp that was at a burial site. The stamp had was a number sign which showed ownership of the grave. 3. What would be the pros and cons of living as a nomad? in a simple village? in a complex village? Being a nomad is good because where ever you travel you will always find good food. A bad thing is that you had to move everywhere to survive. You would get VERY tired. if you live in a complex village, you get more specialization in jobs and you can do more. In a simple village you must always give back the food they hunted for you, which means you have to hunt yourself and give it to them. 4. How did specialization help to establish social classes? Social classes are the ranks in which people are treated. If you are in a lower social class you would be treated very poorly. If you were higher, like a ruler, you would be praised. Depending on your specialization, you could end up anywhere. If you were a farmer for example, you probably wouldn’t be higher than a holy person, or priest. The government would probably be high up. This created occupational classes. The social classes also depend on background, training, customs, and income. -GAV

1. Why did surpluses lead to the growth of trade? Surpluses led to the growth of trade because if there was surplus food, for example, not everyone had to be farmers. This meant, people could specialize in different kind of jobs, such as potters, weavers, shamans, priests, hunters, and gatherers. Then, people could trade their surplus stuff for food.
2. What evidence do we have that leads us to believe that Catal Huyuk was a complex village? We believe Catal Huyuk is a complex village because, it supported 5,000 people, the buildings archaeologists uncovered, and the artwork.
3. What would be the pros and cons of living as a nomad? in a simple village? in a complex village? Living as a nomad, there are pros and cons. Some pros are, you could just move to a new place once an area, ran out of food and
4. How did specialization help establish social classes? Because, some people specialized in the same kind of jobs. Those people came together and formed groups to do the job.

1. Why did surpluses lead to the growth of trade? Surpluses mean more food or materials than needed to survive. So people trade the extras or the surpluses with other people because they do not need it for their basic needs.
2. What evidence do we have that leads us to believe that Catal Huyuk was a complex village? Population in Catal Huyuk was about 5000, there were Shrines which were wall painting where the religious ceremonies took place, and there were Artisans who made luxury items like Mirrors, metal beads, cloth, wooden vessels, and simple pottery. All of these are evidence that Catal Huyuk was complex village.
3. What would be the pros and cons of living as a nomad? In simple village? in a complex village? Advantage living as nomads were they can go or see new places. Disadvantages were sometimes hunters and gatherers had a bad hunting or gathering and could not get enough food. Advantage in simple villages you get enough food you need to survive in but there weren’t surpluses so in bad seasons they would get not enough food. In complex villages there was surpluses, having more than needed which was a advantage, but complex villages, there were many people so there would be more conflicts.
4. How did specialization help to establish social classes? The specialization established social classes by being a professional and being a student. So professional people would be in higher class because they know more things.
